Tribute to Guinjoan

2019

“Genius is no more than childhood recaptured at will, childhood equipped now with man’s physical means to express itself, and with the analytical mind that enables it to bring order into the sum of experience, involuntarily amassed.”.

Baudelaire

Early this year, the composer Joan Guinjoan died. Om magazine paid tribute to him by dedicating a number of the magazine to his beginnings in his hometown and I illustrated the cover.

To do this, I asked myself: his childhood in Riudoms really influenced his music? After some research, I realized how much his origins had influenced him: in many of his songs, he imitated sounds from his childhood.

The cover ended up being a triple cover where there were elements from their childhood reresented in two different ways: with a drawing and the musical transcription of their sound.

1. The bell that was installed when he had his first contact with music

2. The rocking chair of his mother

3. A hoe like the one he used when he was working as a farmer
